Fields of Applied Psychology

Applied psychology takes the science of behavior and mental processes out into the real world to solve practical problems. Psychologists use specialized knowledge to improve well-being, make workplaces better, and tackle tricky issues in health, education, and the legal system. That practical reach is why psychology matters to so many professionals, from teachers to managers to clinicians.

Exam focus

Entrance exams often give you a real-life scenario and ask which applied field it belongs to, so practice matching situations to sub-fields. Students often mix up clinical and counseling psychology; remember that clinical psychology diagnoses mental disorders, while counseling psychology handles everyday career, educational, and social adjustment. Watch out for one more pair too: educational psychology studies teaching and learning, while school psychology counsels children with academic or emotional difficulties.
