Psychology is the scientific study of human and animal behavior and mental processes, and it grew from philosophical roots into a true empirical science. Its whole mission comes down to four things: describe, explain, predict, and control behavior so that people and communities can thrive. The field is wide-ranging, stretching from clinical and counseling work all the way to cognitive and social psychology.
Expect exam questions on how the definition of psychology evolved, especially the shift from studying the "soul" to studying "behavior and mental processes". Students often mix up clinical and counseling psychology, so here’s a way to keep them straight: clinical psychology diagnoses psychological disorders, while counseling psychology helps with everyday educational, vocational, and emotional adjustment.
