The Endocrine System

The endocrine system is your body’s chemical messaging network, sending hormones through the bloodstream to guide growth, organ function, and behavior. It partners closely with the nervous system through the hypothalamus, influencing everything from basic survival drives to your reaction to sudden stress. Glands like the pituitary, adrenals, and gonads shape both your physical state and your emotions.

Exam focus

Entrance exams often ask about the chain of command: hypothalamus, then pituitary, then the other endocrine glands. Students often mix up neural and hormonal communication; here’s a way to remember it: neural messages are fast and direct, while hormonal messages drift more slowly through the bloodstream. Also be ready to tie specific hormones to their psychological effects, like androgens with sex drive or adrenal secretions with the stress response.
